In my grandmother’s house, lots of weird things happen. I have never seen anything but have heard unexplained noises. Once my cousin and I were in the living room watching TV. We heard footsteps coming from my grandparent’s room. No one else was in the house, and we were terrified. My cousin timidly called out, “Who’s there?” The noises stopped abruptly. My cousin went to see who (or what) it was. He came back with a worried face and told me he saw a short person run to the closet. We decided to go someplace else until our grandparents returned, but just then, my uncle walked in. When we told him what had happened, he thought we were joking. He went into the bedroom to check out the closet and assured us that no one was there. We all settled in in front of the TV again, and a few minutes later, the footsteps began again. My uncle commanded the person to “stop playing around and show yourself!” We peeked into the room and saw a little person. My uncle was completely pale and did the only thing he could think that would make us feel better. He offered to take us out for ice cream. It sounds dumb, but I was only 11 at the time, so it worked. Over sundaes, he assured us that it was all our imaginations; there was nothing to worry about. I promised that I was okay-- and I was-- but I never forgot what happened there that day. My grandmother ended up confessing that she saw things there all the time. She said the sometimes, while she tried to sleep, she could hear children giggling in the bedroom. Janet Garcia, Mexico
