The Nurse

This all happened two years ago, after I was in terrible car accident and in the hospital recovering.  I got to know all the nurses; they would always come and chat when they changed shifts. As time went on, I started to worry about my job; how was I going to manage paying all the bills that were piling up? One night, I just couldn't sleep.  It got to be 3:00 a.m., but whatever I did, I couldn't fall asleep. I decided to call the nurse and ask if there was anything she could give me.  An elderly nurse appeared at my side before I had a chance to hit the button and began to talk softly to me. Her words were so comforting, and as I lay there she began to stroke my hair and face.  It felt so relaxing that I began to drift into sleep. I had the best nights sleep of my life, and when I awoke I heard the words, "everything’s going to be alright" in the nurse’s soft voice.

I asked the other nurses who she was, but nobody seemed to be able to tell me. I described her as around 60 years of age with short dark hair, but no one fit that description. Later that day, one of the nurses came and asked me about the mystery nurse.  When I recounted the story, she began to cry.  She then explained that six months ago, she'd lost a dear friend and colleague to a terminal illness. That friend was Sister Williams, the kind nurse who'd soothed me to sleep and stroked my face. This experience was not frightening at all.  When I look back and remember, I always smile. Sister Williams was a remarkable woman in life and had been nursing on that ward for the past 25 years-- she still is! I feel like I have had a visit from an angel.
